It is that time of the year again as we prepare for the Chinese New Year and welcome the year of the Metal Rat, 庚子年, on Saturday 24 January 2020.

We ready ourselves with the usual cleaning, tidying and sprucing up of our practice studio – come along and see what we have done!

Some of our students practice their calligraphy with chun lian 春联, spring couplets, to hang as decorations.

Year of the Rat 2020

The Rat is the first of the 12 zodiac animals and is seen as a sign of wealth and surplus in Chinese culture. It is considered the first animal in the zodiac because it was the first animal to arrive at the Imperial Palace. This also signifies the auspicious start of a new 12-year cycle that will dictate the positive energies to come.

Characteristics of the Rat

  • Their personality is outgoing, cheerful and sociable with the ability to get along well with different people, so there are a lot of friends around them. 
  • No matter what jobs they occupy, they can be a success due to their quick response to changes.
  • In general, a Rat’s best match to other animals in the Chinese Zodiac, according to compatibility rules, come from the Ox, Dragon and Monkey.
